Unit Overview
Labor and Delivery
While visitors are important to provide support during the labor process, there may be times when staff finds it necessary to limit the visitors at your bedside. During the actual delivery, two support people may remain with you if you desire.
Your doctor will be notified of your arrival and will usually see you shortly after your admission. Although he or she may not stay at your bedside for your entire labor, a phone call reports any issues to the provider. Providers are notified when their presence is needed for delivery or at any other time. If your baby has a different doctor than you do, they will be notified following the baby’s birth.
Security
After delivery and a short recovery time, you will move to a private postpartum room. Our family-centered care is designed for the health, comfort, and enjoyment of your family. You may spend as much time with your baby as you choose, keeping your baby in your room 24 hours a day if you desire. Our nurses will help you learn about baby care, feeding, after delivery self-care, and other related topics. Snacks and beverages are available to you at any time.
Shortly after delivery, identification bands will be issued to you, your baby, and the baby’s father or support person. Someone with an identification band must be with the baby at all times. The baby may go to the nursery if no one with a band is available to stay with the baby. For safety and security reasons all hospital staff on the mother-baby unit are required to wear hospital ID badges.
You are encouraged to keep your baby with you in your room. You and your baby are cared for as a pair, receiving your nursing care from the same nurse. This promotes educational opportunities along with open communication between you and your nurse.
Your Stay at McPherson WCBC
During your stay, you will have the opportunity to learn about the best ways to get off to a successful start as a new mom including:
- Two labor rooms provide a comfortable, safe, environment for you to labor and deliver your baby.
- Each room is equipped with state of the art monitoring devices used during labor, a private bathroom with shower, and a comfortable chair for your support person.
- Advanced newborn equipment provides staff with everything needed to care for your new baby.
- After delivery, patients and their family are moved to a postpartum room with private bathroom as well as space for visitors and one overnight guest if desired.
- We offer all delivery options including vaginal, cesarean section and trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC).
- Specifically trained for labor and delivery, the nurses and staff at the WCBC hold certifications through the American Heart Association Neonatal Resuscitation Program and Association for Women’s Health and Neonatal Nursing fetal monitoring program which gives them the most up to date and advanced knowledge to care for both you and your baby.
- Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) are available 24 hours a day to administer labor epidurals as requested by you.
- A celebration meal is provided for you and one guest prior to you going home.
- Mothers receive insulated bags filled with educational and fun materials for your new adventure.
- Babies receive a commemorative onesie from McPherson Hospital.
- A special birth announcement is created and posted to the McPherson Hospital facebook page with your permission.

- If you require a cesarean section, you will be able to have one support person present with you during the delivery. Occasionally, circumstances do not make it possible for a support person to be present in the operating room. C sections take place in an operating suite located on the WHBC unit. Experienced surgical personnel provide care during the operation. A WHBC nurse will be present to care for your baby at the time of delivery.
- We provide a secure unit by controlling access into and out of the department. When you or your guests arrive, simply press the doorbell and we will release the door lock system to let you in. You will also need similar staff assistance to leave the unit.
- There is a place for family and friends to wait just outside the department so they are never far away. There is also another waiting area just inside the hospital entrance if more space is needed.
